The BCBS PPO is a preferred provider organization (PPO) that combines the advantages of a national network with the option to use physicians and facilities outside the network, but at a higher cost. When you join the BCBS PPO, you are not required to choose a primary care physician.

PPOs cover your care if you visit an out-of-network provider or facility. However, you may pay a higher amount for out-of-network services. PPOs cannot charge more than Original Medicare charges for certain kinds of care, including chemotherapy, dialysis, and skilled nursing facility (SNF) care.

Do you need to call bcbsil to get pre-authorization?

You may need to get pre-authorization (or pre-notification) from BCBSIL before getting certain tests or services. Your doctor’s office will call the pre-authorization number on the back of your BCBSIL member ID card to confirm. You can also call before you go for care or to confirm your doctor’s office has gotten the needed authorization.
