When should I replace my bike gear cables?
5000 to 6000 miles is a good time frame to replace the cables. Other wise wait till they brake and either have a good stiff pedal in or nice easy spin, depending on the broken cable.
When should you replace shifter cables?
It really depends on the amount of use. Every 2 years sounds good. My rear usually fails in that amount of time. If you are looking for durability, sealed cables are known to last a long time.
Are all Shimano gear cables compatible?
Any Shimano compatible cable will work with your shifter. I would suggest stainless steel cables (better than galvanised cables) because they will stay in nice condition, so operate well, for longer.

You will have to remove bartape to replace the cables so if you remove it before doing this it makes it far easier as you can push through from right at the shifter. the cable should pop out of the hole shown on the installation instructions.
