Can TrueCrypt encrypt files?

Can TrueCrypt encrypt files?

One useful encryption utility is TrueCrypt, from the TrueCrypt Foundation. With this free, open-source program, you can create virtual encrypted disks or encrypt entire drives, including the Windows drive.

How do I open a TrueCrypt file?

Any data added to this drive is automatically encrypted, and any data removed from the drive is automatically decrypted.

  1. Open TrueCrypt.
  2. Click the “Select File” button from the bottom right of the TrueCrypt window.
  3. Locate the TrueCrypt container file in the navigation window, and double-click it.

What is a TrueCrypt file?

TrueCrypt is a software program that creates an encrypted file on your computer and lets you access the encrypted file using a drive letter. Files can be copied to and from a mounted TrueCrypt volume (container) just like they are copied to/from any normal disk (for example, by simple drag-and-drop operations).

What types of encrypted volumes does TrueCrypt support?

There are two types of TrueCrypt volumes:

  • File-hosted (container)
  • Partition/device-hosted (non-system)

Why is my filesystem not working on my TrueCrypt?

After successfully mounting a volume, Windows reports “This device does not contain a valid file system” or a similar error. The file system on the TrueCrypt volume may be corrupted (or the volume is unformatted). You can use filesystem repair tools supplied with your operating system to attempt to repair the filesystem on the TrueCrypt volume.

How does TrueCrypt work with a video file?

When you double click the icon of the video file, the operating system launches the application associated with the file type – typically a media player. The media player then begins loading a small initial portion of the video file from the TrueCrypt-encrypted volume to RAM (memory) in order to play it.

Is there a way to mount a TrueCrypt volume?

Yes, TrueCrypt-encrypted volumes are like normal disks. You provide the correct password (and/or keyfile) and mount (open) the TrueCrypt volume. When you double click the icon of the video file, the operating system launches the application associated with the file type – typically a media player.

How does passware know if a disk is TrueCrypt?

For system partitions, Passware Kit analyzes the boot loader and recognizes whether the disk is TrueCrypt or VeraCrypt. Passware Kit also detects the system partitions of the GUID Partition Table (GPT) disks encrypted with VeraCrypt and further decrypts them. Since TrueCrypt does not support GPT, we can know for sure that this disk is VeraCrypt.
