You grew up in Oregon, in a pretty rural environment. What was your earliest memory as a kid? Sage Canaday: One of my earliest memories as a kid was riding my bicycle up and down the gravel driveway at my parents’ house.

Sage Canaday, an Oregon Native, is an accomplished runner in multiple disciplines on both the trail and the road. He attended Cornell University and at the age of 21 was the youngest runner at the 2008 Olympic Trials Marathon.

My day-to-day diet varies depending on my training and racing goals. I eat lots of salads with nuts for plant-based protein and fats and snack on fruit and coconut yogurt. When I’m running, I usually carry packets of almond butter and Muir energy gels for on-the-go snacks. Long runs require frequent fueling.

Trans fats are only found in animal products and take more energy to breakdown, often stored as fat rather than converted to useable energy, leaving less energy for running. Unencumbered by this, vegans benefit from more instant energy that is ideal for tempo (HIIT) or strength training.
