Why do my floor tiles sound hollow?

Why do my floor tiles sound hollow?

Occasionally, a floor will sound hollow even when the tile is well bonded. This can occur when a mortar bed method is used and the mortar has delaminated from the supporting layer or when the subfloor itself is not sufficiently thick or well attached. Over wood, floor failure is more likely.

Can hollow tiles break?

On the other hand, you may find that a bonded mortar bed has debonded from the slab, for one reason or another, causing the hollow sound, but that condition will not cause any resultant problems in terms of the long term performance of the tiled floor. Voids under tile can weaken the tile and cause breaking.

Are hollow floor tiles a problem?

ANSWER – Having hollow tiles by itself doesn’t mean there is a problem. But that fact that when the tiles were removed they came up in one piece is an indication they are not bonded well. They should come up in small pieces if they were bonded well.

Can uneven tiles be fixed?

Quite often, the reason for uneven tiles is an uneven layer of thinset mortar holding tiles on the floor. To repair uneven tiles, you need to remove the tiles and repair their base. Once you reset the tiles, you need to regrout them. Use grout that matches the original to make the repair less obvious.

Should tile be perfectly even?

Initial Installation If the job was done right, all of the floor’s joints should be even and the edges of each tile should be nice and level. Uneven tiles are often referred to as “lipping.” Lipping can also lead to chipping of the tiles where the floor between tiles is uneven.

Can loose floor tiles be fixed?

To deal with one or more floor tiles that have come loose, simply remove the loose tiles. If the adjoining tiles are also loose, scrape out the grout around them and pry them out carefully as well. Press the tiles into place, allow to dry for 24 hours, then regrout the tiles. Good as new!

How is hollow sounding tile bonded to concrete?

Hollow Sounding Tile. In the mortar bed installation, the mortar bed is not bonded to the concrete – rather it is isolated from cracks in the concrete by the cleavage membrane. This allows the tile to “float” over the concrete. In the thinset installation, a crack isolation/anti-fracture membrane is bonded to the concrete.

How big of a void do you need for a hollow tile floor?

The requirement is at least 80% continuous contact between the back of the tile and its substrate, no voids larger than 2 square inches, and full thin-set contact at edges and corners.  There is no standard for how hollow a floor can sound.
